Who We Are
The Church
Founded in 1743 by German and Swiss immigrants near Perkasie, PA, Saint Peter's Tohickon UCC is a historic congregation near Lake Nockamixon. Originally a Reformed and Lutheran union church ("Friedens Kirche"), it became a United Church of Christ (UCC) congregation in 1957. The current stone building dates to 1853, following earlier log structures.
Key Historical Aspects:
- Origins: Founded to serve German immigrants seeking religious freedom, it was noted by Henry Muhlenberg in 1742 before its formal 1743 establishment.
- Union Church: For over 200 years, the Reformed and Lutheran congregations shared the building, with separate doors for each denomination.
- Evolution: The current structure was built in 1853, with major renovations in 1926 (adding a tower and chancel) and significant expansions in 1966 and 1999.
- Modern Era: In 2015, the congregation formally adopted an open and affirming covenant.
The church is known for its extensive cemetery containing burials from before the Revolutionary War.
